Language Arts

Phonics, reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, grammar, usage, punctuation, vocabulary, listening and comprehension skills are covered through a combination of the Logic of English curriculum and Adventures in Alphabetoo, a grand adventure through the hidden jungle of Alphabetoo where students learn to read along with Andy Ape and all his friends through puppets, songs, games, worksheets, and videos - designed by our very own Miss Cindy Penderghast! Students will fall in love with reading through their exploration of a captivating collection of picture books (different each week!). Fun and engaging activities, projects, and exercises will develop their comprehension skills, improve their understanding of a story’s content, characters and sequence of events, and help them make connections between their own experiences and knowledge with each story. “Since it is so likely that they will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage…” - C. S. Lewis

Science: Habitats

Using the One Small Square book series as a spine, students will explore, like scientists, discovering all they can about different ecosystems and the wildlife that inhabits them through a blend of conversational textual information, highly interactive activities, living science books and weekly nature study experiences. Get ready for your students to become lifelong naturalists who love, care for, and appreciate this wonderful world they live in! This year’s habitats include:

  • Coral Reef

  • Woods

  • Seashore

  • Night Sky

  • Swamp

  • Cactus Desert

History/World Geography

Our history sequence studies the history of the world chronologically through a 4-year repeating cycle. Focusing on the Medieval Era, this time period will come alive to students as they immerse themselves in its major events, people, and different cultures through the story-like format of The Story of the World text, captivating historical fiction literature, and a breadth of hands-on activities such as map work, timelines, arts, crafts, writing, highly interactive small-group history-based STEM challenges, and just fun supplemental activities!

Fine Arts: Medieval Era

This class includes artist studies & corresponding “meet the masters” type art projects, handicrafts, composer studies, and poet studies along with folk songs and more. Our first semester fine arts showcase and our culminating end-of-year historical event provide opportunities for our students to share their talents and creations within our co-op community.
